Comitas Institute for anthropological study

In 1993, Donald Marshall Jr was arrested on charges under the Fisheries Act. In 1999, the Supreme Court ruled he had a treaty right to secure a "moderate livelihood" by fishing. Following the decision, the people of Esgenoôpetitj (Burnt Church) exercised their rights by lobster fishing and were met with unprovoked attacks by non-native fishermen. The CIFAS site details the Marshall decision, Esgenoôpetitj’s stand, provides historical background, and an index of media coverage.

Aboriginal Rights Coalition

ARC-A works towards the transformation of the relationships between Atlantic Canadian society and Aboriginal peoples. Through education, research, advocacy, and action this regional coalition of churches, other faith bodies, and regional social justice groups works in solidarity with Aboriginal peoples. ARC-A seeks to embody the partnership by building authentic alliances in the struggle for Aboriginal justice.

The Native Women's Association of Canada

The Native Women's Association of Canada has struggled for three decades to improve the social, economic, cultural and political well-being of Aboriginal women in Canada. The progress to achieve equality for Aboriginal women in Canada society has been a relatively slow process. This website is another tool to help advocate, educate and promote their goals and promote gender issues.

The Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative

The Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative is conducted through a series of meetings with the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada. The Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative is seeking consensus on the best ways to implement Aboriginal and treaty rights in the Martimes… for now, and for seven generations to come.

Bringing Annie Mae Home

Annie Mae Aquash (nee Pictou), well known for her Native American activism, was murdered in the South Dakota Badlands in December 1975. Annie Mae's daughters participated with filmmaker Catherine Martin in the making of the documentary, The Spirit of Annie Mae. This website is the story of their ongoing journey to justice for Annie Mae.
